Dr. Oz Beauty Salon Secrets
Dr. Oz: Health secrets that beauty salons don't want you to know, this segment of the Dr. Oz is going to open a few eyes today. Topics such as STD's from a bikini wax, ring worm from a haircut, skin cancer from the UV light in nail dryers, infections fro whirling foot baths. Think twice before you go to a salon!
I have heard about the horror stories from the nail salons, getting a nail fungus that is practically impossible to get rid off, and sores and scars from foot baths, and the like but getting an STD from a bikini wax topped it all. It makes sense how it could happen, I just never thought about it until today. I am not a high maintenance person and go for all that salon perks, if I can't do it myself or a friend help me out, I'm not getting it done.
Here are a few secrets beauty salons don't want you to know from Tabatha Coffey: "What infections are you bringing home from the salon?"
That innocent manicure to have those oh so nice nails, or maybe you go and get your hair touched up on a monthly basis. Dr. Oz talked about how some salons cut corners just to save a buck and you just might be the unfortunate one to pay it, literally.
Dr. Oz had 4 salon technicians to expose some of the industries dirtiest little secrets.
Dirty little secrets:
- Often razors are used in pedicures by nail technicians that are not properly trained
- Salons often refill expensive shampoo and conditioner bottles with cheaper products to save money
- The disinfectant they keep their tools isn't changed enough
- They buy drugstore brand haircolor but sell it as salon quality
Dr. Oz: UV light Nail Dryers May Cause Cancer
Dr. Oz told everyone today that he UV light nail dryers may cause cancer, the UV light can cause cancer on the back of the hands, age spots and then showed us a picture of a ladies hand with cancer on her finger and it was linked to the UVA lights from getting her nails done.
Next time you're getting your nails done, turn of the UV lights and just use the dryer, if you want to use the light put on sunscreen SPF 30 with Zinc Oxide. Take this with you to the salon and insist that they use this on your hands when getting your nails done.
Dr. Oz: Foot Baths
Whirling Foot Baths: Next beauty secret that salons don't want you to know: The faster the water moves in the foot baths the more disgusting it is. When the foot bath is being filled back up (after the person before you) and starts whirling around people are actually getting infections and boils on their legs that are lasting for months.
'I have seen pictures of women's feet and legs with sores and scars from infections contracted from foot baths at the salon, so you might want to thinks twice about wanting pretty feet from a salon'
Dr. Oz had 5 whirling foot baths tested for germs and had the swabs York University and bacteria was found that can lead to skin infections, urinary tract infections, even pneumonia from the a whirling foot bath.
Solution: Take your own foot bath liner with you when you go to the salon, there will be no whirling but it is a heck of a lot safer.
Dr. Oz: Ringworm from a haircut
If someone is combing through your hair with sectioning clips and brushes and someone was there before you that had ringworm, lice, whatever and your hairdresser is not sterilizing things properly then it is passed on to the next client.
With proper disinfecting this would never happen, but as Tabatha told Dr. oz some salons have swapped out and using windex in the big jars filled with Barbicide that are sitting in front of you with the combs in it.
Or they may not be changing it enough, the barbicide should be a dark blue not light blue and ask them if they disinfected that comb they are using on you.
Dr. Oz: Bikini Wax
Is it Possible For STDs to Be Spread Through Waxing? It is absolutely possible for STDs to be spread through waxing the bikini area.
The last little secret your salon may not be telling you is they don't change the bikini wax as often as they should. Number one reason not cost effective but worse than that is double dipping.
Double dipping in the wax will hold the bacteria in the wax and not kill it...But it gets worse than that, not only bacteria gets passed on but so can STD's.
Now that is just gone beyond anything I have ever heard about salons. Getting an STD from a bikini wax that has been double dipped!
Bikini waxes which remove more hair from the genital area, such as Brazilian or French bikini waxing, will get closer to the vagina and for this reason can be more dangerous in terms of STDs.
Better off doing your own Brazilian or ask a friend to help you out, it may be a little intimidating but hey it's better than getting an STD for a bikini wax, then you won't care if anyone notices you had am awesome bikini wax or not.
You will be the only one looking at it!
Tabatha told Dr. One should pick up a hydrocortisone cream or an OTC antibiotic cream to take down any inflammation that you may have and also help cut down the risk of infection
